LULA hair + makeup is real beauty for real life.
For the last seven years, Samantha Ray has been a strong presence for on-site hair and makeup styling in NC and the southeast, best known for her fresh, natural, and romantic aesthetic. In that time, she has provided hair and makeup services for several hundreds of brides, bridesmaids, and women for special occasions. She has met with dozens of women to help them create a daily beauty plan that works for them, including product recommendations based on their budget, lifestyle, and skin type. She has created looks for celebrities in town for promotional work, collaborated with wedding publications and vendors for inspirational photoshoots, and partnered with national businesses, brands, and charities for promotional photoshoots (Emily Ley, Haerfest, Burts Bees.)
This year, she is focusing on a transition out of wedding styling, and into styling for photoshoots as well as becoming a resource of real beauty for real women. While she will still take on select and limited clients for styling, she will be creating consistent, meaningful, and practical content in the Journal for the everyday girl, and continuing her creative journey in beauty and womanhood on a broader scale. To partner with Samantha for publications, blog contributions, speaking engagements, or styling collaborations, please contact her here.
Lula is my grandmother's name – Lula Saphronia Whitfield Crowder. I carry her name with me to this day, not only through the business, but as a namesake - Samantha Whitfield Crowder Ray. She was the mother of seven, grandmother of twenty-three, and a loving wife for over forty years. She remains an icon of grace, loyalty, and enduring beauty to our family. Beauty is so much more than hair and makeup, so the reason behind the name is to remind you of what’s true – You are beautiful, and life is full of beautiful moments! LULA exists to help you enjoy the beauty in the everyday, where you are, with what you have now.
I have enjoyed beauty inspiration for as long as I can remember. As the youngest of four girls, Clinique, hot rollers, and caboodles were never far out of reach. I was that friend in school who regularly did makeovers before dances and proms (and for no reason at all!) I would, and still do, study the pages of select magazines to understand whole looks - hair, makeup, fashion, and how it all fits and moves in an atmosphere. Little by little my name passed around for hair and makeup styling, and I gave the endeavor a name and a purpose - to bless women with luxury beauty consultation and styling, and to help them feel as beautiful as they are. I have done on-site hair and makeup for seven years, and am excited for the next season in my journey.
Beauty is more than hair, makeup, fashion, and being ahead of trend. It is the intangible quality of a woman with joy, confidence, grace, and peace.
You are beautiful as you are, right now. That belief is worth growing and cultivating in our lives every day - for ourselves, our daughters, our nieces, our friends, and the next gen of young women looking to us for inspiration and guidance.
Beauty is always from the inside out.
Hair styles and makeup are fun, like decorating a cake that's already delicious.
We all need a little help navigating the "beauty" world to figure out what works best for us - our budget, lifestyle, personal style, and particular needs.
Community and creative collaboration are better than competition. Friendship is better than being lonely. Being open is better than hiding.
You are unique. Embrace your natural flavor & flair.
