Last week I had the privilege of donning my best sparkly dress and attending Southern Weddings V8 Launch Party at The Carolina Inn. The afternoon was a whirlwind getting some of the SW gals glammed up for the evening, and getting myself ready with a little extra oomph. I LOVE having an excuse to get all sparkly-dressed up! The opportunities don't come often as an adult (i.e.: attending weddings is my personal red-carpet outlet!), but the holiday season is fast approaching and is sure to bring along some dressy parties we can all get extra oomph-ed for!
The evening was filled with yummy foods, live music, lots of laughing with colleagues and friends, and more fabulous hair and shimmery makeup than I usually do for day-to-day. The next morning is what I like to call the hair + makeup hangover!
I love the hangover. I relish in it actually! This is the best time to give your skin and hair a much needed break after all the fun it had, and work it did, the night before.
My recipe for a great h+m hangover is wild hair (+ a hat if needed), clean skin, lots of water (+ a little bit of coffee!)
No matter how late I stay out the night before, I wash my face before bed with a gentle cleanser (I've really been enjoying Biore's Charcoal Cleanser) and wipe with a wet wash cloth, then moisturize. This is NOT the time for makeup wipes, REPEAT: This is NOT the time for makeup wipes!!! It just won't cut it with the onslaught of cosmetics and sweat that your face normally doesn't experience right before bedtime. Your skin will thank you for a real water + soap wash!
I sweep my hair up into a gentle elastic so my face doesn't have to sleep in a pool of hair product, and snooze peacefully until morning. This sets up your hair and skin for the perfect recovery day!
I start my hair + makeup hangover day by washing my face with cold water and a gentle cleanser, and then another round of moisturizer. The refreshing idea here is to wear the least amount of makeup as possible! Ah!! Relish in it friends! Hair + makeup should always be fun, but we all need a clean break every once in a while to remind 'em who's boss! There's something so liberating about that!
My hangover go-to for makeup includes a scant few dabs of concealer to spot-correct and minimize dark circles under sleepy eyes, a swoosh of mascara, and a simple lip balm (I use Aquaphor!). A nice trick of the trade for these minimal makeup days is to include brushing your eyebrows, and avoid putting mascara on your bottom lashes. This will draw attention away from sleepy dark circles under your eyes. Occasionally I'll put on some BB cream if I want a teensy bit of extra coverage (Garnier has a great option), or a bit of lip/cheek stain like my all-time fave Benefit BeneTint.
For hair, I prefer to go wild and free for my hangover! Instead of sweeping it up and away, I let my hairs enjoy being down and uninhibited for a day. I brush through my hair, working out any styling and product from the night before, work a little dry shampoo into the roots if needed, and comb in some replenishing oil to the ends (OGX Moroccan Argan Oil is great). Add a hat if you want, because no one needs to know what's going on under there!
From there, my beauty focus for the day is drinking as much water as possible to rehydrate my system after many a dance move and inevitably some less-than-healthy eating choices the night before, and to give my hair and skin an added boost for the day. Adding lemon will make you feel like a queen, I'm just saying!
Here's to many more hair + makeup hangovers in the coming weeks - holiday parties, we're comin for ya!
